Post-Recession Drives Auto Industry Change

There is no doubt, the recession changed the automotive industry, however, the real game changer may actually be found in the new post-recession consumer mindset, demographic shifts and how automakers are responding.

Check out the Personalized Fuel Efficiency App Challenge.

According to Jim Farley, the executive vice president of Global Marketing, Sales and Service and Lincoln, as everyone is breathing a sigh of relief about sales levels getting back to normal, he says, “the real news is that the great recession has dealt a fundamental change to the consumer’s mindset.” He adds, “The question of whether consumers are returning to the market is settled. Now the question is, ‘What do they want and expect from us, and are we really ready to respond to what has just taken place?’”

Farley shared those thoughts during his keynote address at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.  The recession has influenced how consumers decide to make purchases and what they value an automobile. He shared several post-recession trends that he believes will drive industry change – shifting expectations around luxury, the rise of women and Hispanics, a renewed focus on fuel economy and the rapid proliferation of mobile platforms.

Great Luxury Expectations

Luxury is now no longer defined simply by price, size and exclusivity. Farley says, “Now, people are breaking the association of luxury with a high price tag,” He says they are looking for the same luxury quality, performance and features in smaller vehicles at more reasonable prices.

Women, Hispanics Transform Market

Baby boomers will continue to have the greatest influence over the market for many years to come, however, Farley pointed to a shift among women, Hispanics as well millennials as a big role player in the marketplace in years to come.

One of the most powerful trend will likely be found in the rising consumer power of women across the globe. “More than 1 billion women will enter the middle class globally by 2020, and many will be buying vehicles for the first time,” Farley said.

Rapid urbanization is drawing women to cities all over the world.  There  they are trading agricultural work for professional careers. In the United States, women are outpacing male buyers for the first time ever.

Hispanic households are becoming increasingly more affluent with a 126 percent increase in U.S. Hispanic households making more than $100,000 a year. Hispanic households are a total net worth of more than $500 billion.

Behold the Power of Mobile Platforms

Mobile devices are a big player in the new landscape of the automotive field – from marketing and shopping to the actual in-vehicle experience. Farley says that the automotive industry needs to learn to think like their customers. “Most of us recognize that mobile is a power enabler for customers, putting them in control of the shopping process and changing their expectations around connectivity.”

Did you know?

Nearly one in seven people worldwide now uses a smartphone, this has significant influence on the auto industry.

Doug Frisbie, the Facebook head of Automotive Vertical Marketing, joined the keynote presentation and shared how successful businesses in every industry – including automakers – put people at the center.

“Cars were a step change in giving society the ability to stay connected and engaged with the people they cared about,” he said. “The opportunity at hand today is not about phones or social software in cars.”

Brendon Kraham, Google director of Global Mobile Sales and Product Strategy, joined in, as well. He added that the in-car mobile experience will soon be integrated into all the devices consumers use to stay connected.

“Automobiles will soon become a seamless part of the consumer mobile experience,” Kraham said. “It will enhance the experience. When your dash becomes a seamlessly connected screen, it truly becomes a more important, integrated part of your life.”

Fuel Economics

One of the greatest cross-demographic shifts since the recession is the growing number of people who now focus on a vehicle’s fuel economy. It is now one of the the top considerations when buying a vehicle.

Farley said, “We now have a torrent of ‘best-in-class’ claims hitting consumers from all sides, and it’s starting to become noise,” He says with so much information it can be overload and cause confusion as consumers try to make an informed decision. “Given the connectivity in our cars and the proliferation of mobile devices, we have the opportunity to give consumers better and more relevant data to understand what they can expect in on-the-road fuel economy performance.”

Harnessing the power of mobile platforms, Farley announced developers will have access to Ford’s OpenXC connectivity research platform as a sandbox to create and test innovative ideas in the newly announced $50,000 Personalized Fuel Efficiency App Challenge.

Many elements factor into your personalized fuel efficiency including temperature, terrain, traffic and driving styles. The goal of this challenge is to enable drivers to optimize their efficiency on the road and then share that data with others.

Ford: Agent of Global Change & Health Care Help

Ford empowers women and saves lives in rural India through new technology and Ford's SUV capabilities

Ford empowers women and saves lives in rural India through new technology and Ford’s SUV capabilities

Henry Ford had a vision. He believed that vehicles, like his Model T, would improve lives by having the ability to have greater mobility. More than 100 years later, that vision has spanned the globe and Ford is now a global agent for change.

Thanks to new technology and Ford’s SUV capabilities, women and their new children have a better chance at getting the proper medical assistance and information during their pregnancies and childbirth (if required).  Ford has been working with public and private organizations on a pilot program designed to bring the right healthcare to the women and children living in an inaccessible part of rural India.

Sustainable Urban Mobility with Uncompromised Rural Reach, known as SUMURR, enabled childbirth for 41 women with high-risk mothers pregnancies, visited 54 villages, and reached more than 3,100 people to facilitate community awareness programs focused on maternal and child healthcare.

One key was for SUMURR to be successful and reach these remote areas, was the Ford Endeavour. It is an SUV designed to handle the rough terrain of the region and powered by some of Ford’s most advanced technologies, which extended the physical reach of the healthcare services.

Mageswari, 19, was one of the women who benefited from this program. She lives in Kodamaathi, a very small village in rural India where Ford concluded the nine-month pilot program that helped pregnant women overcome their geographical and technological barriers that prevented them from receiving adequate health care.

After arriving in rural areas, healthcare professionals utilized their laptops and cell phones to connect with doctors and medical assistance in ways they never have before. The results… SUMURR helped make a safe childbirth possible for 41 pregnant women like Mageswari, who – with the help of the Ford Endeavour – was able to make it to the hospital in just enough time to give birth. “If not for Ford Endeavour, I might have tried to reach the hospital in a two-wheeler,” she says. “I do not know what might have happened.”

The area of Kalvarayan Hills has a higher infant and maternity mortality rate compared with most other pockets of Tamil Nadu, which is a key indicator of the great need for prenatal care in that area.

Click above on the video to see the SUMMURR story or click here to read the full story from Ford and how they are helping make healthcare available to all corners of the globe.

Flashback: Car Tunes Over Time

1966 Ford Eight-Track Player

1966 Ford Eight-Track Player

Flipping through Car And Driver, I came across an article that made me stop and think… do you remember the days before satellite radio or MP3s?

Ask many 20-something drivers about cassette tapes and most won’t have a clue what you’re talking about, much less eight-track tapes. Over the past 80 years, the way car tunes have been delivered have come and gone, but no matter the road we travel, one things is for sure… we all want traveling music.

1930: First Commercially Installed Radio
According to Car And Driver, the Galvin brothers’ expensive $130 unit was the first commercially successful car radio, and the first product to wear the Motorola name.

original 1952: First FM Radio
AM was king of the airwaves in the ’50s, but that didn’t stop Blaupunkt from introducing FM radio.

1953: Enters Becker Mexico
Becker’s iconic Mexico radio launched this year, arguably the first premium in-car radio. It had AM/FM and the first fully automatic station-search button.

1955: First “Music On Demand”
Starting in ’55, Chrysler offered a small turntable in its high-end cars, playing proprietary seven-inch records with about 45 minutes of music. Can you guess how well that went over? Maybe it just skipped over… and over… and over.

1963: First All-Transistor Radio
A number of manufacturers introduced transistors to their aftermarket car radios in the early ’60s, but Becker’s Monte Carlo was the first to be fully “solid state”—no vacuum tubes.

1965: First Eight-Track  Player
Predecessor to the cassette, the eight-track was a loser from the start and was dead by the early ’80s. Ford and Motorola jointly introduced in-car eight-track players this year.

1969: First Stereo
Becker’s Europa was the first in-car stereo setup, with the tuner amplifying two channels instead of one.

1970–1977: Cassette-Tape Players
The rollout of cassettes allowed for one of mankind’s greatest achievements: the mix tape. This development also heralded the creation of branded aftermarket cassette-tape players from Alpine and Pioneer, among others.

1982: Bose First Premium System
Bose and GM’s Delco teamed up to offer the first “designer” stereo system. Bose sank money into car-specific development; rather than just producing an expensive head unit, it was marketing the entire system to Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac shoppers.

1985: First In-Dash CD Player
While Sony had introduced an in-dash player the previous year, Becker’s Mexico Compact Disc was the first to be factory installed.

Ford Dealers Give Millions & Volunteer Thousands Annually

Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 12.26.08 AMHenry Ford once said, “The gifted man bears his gifts into the world, not for his own benefit, but for the people among whom he is placed; for the gifts are not his, he himself is a gift to the community.”

Mr. Ford would be happy to see that those whom carry on the Ford legacy city-by-city, state-by-state and country-by-country are also carrying on his legacy of giving back to the communities they are part of.

A new study of Ford and Lincoln dealers shows that they contribute between $35.1 million and $84.6 million to charities and nonprofits across the U.S. annually. The sheer amount of hours dealers and their employees donate also entails up to an additional 4,380 people working 40 hours per week year-round.

At our family of dealerships, we also subscribe to the same belief that it is key to be part of and support the communities that we are proud to be a member of. We support a number of local school fundraisers, local charities and national charities.

Not only do we give as owners and as dealerships, we are thankful to have wonderful employees who donate of their own time for local charities.  That’s what it takes to make change, everyone pulling together and giving what they can for the betterment of all. When we all give a little, we can help a lot.”

Ford is showcasing the winners of the Ford annual Salute to Dealers awards. These are people in the Ford family who demonstrate breadth of local giving and showing exceptional generosity toward their communities. To see the videos and read more, visit Ford’s site.

Ford Atlas Concept Truck Receives Accolades, Awards!

For the sixth year in a row, Ford vehicles on display at NAIAS have garnered Autoweek award recognition

For the sixth year in a row, Ford vehicles on display at NAIAS have garnered Autoweek award recognition

Ford is no stranger to creating award winning concept cars and this year, they are making headlines again with their bold new ideas.  The Ford Atlas Concept, an eye-catching vision for the future of pickups, has been named Autoweek Magazine’s Most Significant vehicle of the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

“The Atlas Concept is clearly Most Significant winner for the things you don’t see, like hidden aerodynamic improvements and weight savings from high-strength steel and interior parts, like thinner seats,” said Bob Gritzinger, Autoweek executive editor. “Those things add up to significant fuel savings for pickup trucks down the road. A next-generation EcoBoost® with Auto Start-Stop technology also signals why Atlas is a real game changer.”

The Ford Atlas Concept made its global debut at NAIAS on Jan. 15. The truck is a design and engineering study inspired by decades of listening to customers in the places where they work and play.

The Atlas features several breakthrough features including: active aerodynamic elements in the grille, front air dam and wheels that reduce wind resistance to save gas. Truck-specific features that improve capability, durability and productivity include a Dual-Purpose Tailgate Step that integrates with a roof cradle to become a rack for long objects like ladders, Hidden Cargo Ramps to load ATVs and motorcycles, Trailer Backup Assist to enable accurate reversing with a trailer via the simple twist of a knob, and more.

This isn’t the first award-winning year for Ford. In fact, this is the 6th year in a row Autoweek has honored Ford with one of its North American International Auto Show Editors’ Choice Awards. Past winners have included:
