Ford brings home Three “Vehicle of the Year” Awards at the 2018 SEMA

Ford drives home a trophy case full 2018 SEMA Awards. Three perennial favorite Ford vehicles collected Vehicle of the Year awards at the annual SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas this month. F-Series, Mustang and Focus all received top honors.

“We are honored that SEMA Show exhibitors have bestowed Ford with these prestigious awards,” said Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance. “We make a point of embracing the aftermarket and appreciate this endorsement from the SEMA community as we strive to keep our best-selling nameplates among the most customized vehicles around the world.”

The Ford F-Series, known as America’s favorite truck, was named SEMA’s Truck of Year. This is the Ford F-Series eighth time to garner this honor in a nine-year history of the award. Ford’s new campaign “Built Ford Proud” is showing that the brand is living up to its new marketing moniker.

Focus continues to garner a strong following in the aftermarket with its performance ST and RS variants leading the draw. The nameplate has won four repeat awards from the SEMA organization in Sport Compact and Hatch categories.

“Ford vehicles serve as great platforms for personalization, evident by the three SEMA Awards announced today,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA President and CEO. “Regardless of whether drivers are choosing a car, truck or sport compact vehicle, they can be confident in knowing there’s a tremendous range of options for customization when they select a Ford vehicle.”

Ford’s presence at SEMA remains the largest of any automaker with more than 50 vehicles on display, including a large collection of custom builds at its stand. This is the eighth year for the Ford Out Front performance demonstration track, annually a lead attraction at the show.

Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA)

The Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) was founded in 1963. The SEMA event is held annually during the first weekend of November in Las Vagas, Nevada.

The SEMA Award is an annual award given to vehicle models in four categories: Hottest Car, Hottest Sport Compact, Hottest Truck and Hottest 4×4-SUV. According to the SEMA Show, “The SEMA Award winners represent the models that industry experts—the SEMA Show exhibitors—seek to feature most often in their booths as the hottest rides for the enthusiast market. It also underscores the cooperative relationship between the automakers and SEMA-member companies.”

A New Standard: The Ford GT Carbon Series

The new limited-edition model drops nearly 40 pounds by adding carbon fiber wheels, a titanium exhaust, titanium lugnuts and a polycarbonate rear hatch with additional venting.

New 2019 Ford GT Carbon Series is the lightest car in the company’s GT lineup, saving nearly 40 pounds with lightweight innovations such as carbon fiber wheels and a polycarbonate engine cover

“The Ford GT Carbon Series stands out on the road with its striking carbon fiber-rich design and on the track with its athleticism,” says Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance. “It is yet another example of how we can bring to life our Le Mans-winning supercar in new and exciting ways so our customers can share in that magical legacy.”

With a new version comes new conveniences such as air conditioning, a radio and SYNC® 3 – for those customers who want to drive to and from the track in comfort. But don’t think you can swing into your local Starbucks on the way home. They drew the line to keep the weight in check by removing cupholders and the driver’s side seat storage bin.

A Look at Who was behind the Brilliant 2019 Jetta Design

Ever wonder how the genius re-design of the stunning new 2019 Jetta was done and who was behind it?

Meet Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen’s head designer.

“Cars are always reflecting society, fashion, architecture — they’re part of the development of mankind,” says Klaus Bischoff. “From the beginning, we said we need to have a breakthrough and create a new design language for this product.”

This spectacular design wasn’t done overnight, Volkswagen reports that it reflects years of exacting design work by a dedicated team that had to anticipate American market trends, meet a host of engineering requirements, and eventually craft a look that can appeal to millions.

This is the seventh iteration of Jetta. The sedan has had a successful design history throughout the years. The designers stay up to date on the latest style trends and keep the Jetta up the ranks. With the move to a new chassis and all-new bodywork, designers had a high level of freedom to push the Jetta’s design forward with an American audience in mind — without losing the classic precision that’s a VW hallmark.

“We wanted to create a design that stands out,” says Bischoff, “so when you see it on the road it is charismatic.”

Courtesy of VW Media

The face of the Jetta has all-new stunning LED daytime running lights, the designers created a unique light “signature” for the Jetta. Bischoff notes that, as with other new Volkswagen vehicles like the upcoming 2019 Arteon, the grille and lights are combined into one wide graphic, creating a lower, sleeker appearance.

The 40 miles to a gallon perk is one of Jetta’s driving force, Volkswagen had a new challenge in front of them, slick and fuel-efficient combined. The solution was aerodynamics. An often crease or feature such as larger wheels that adds character also adds aerodynamic drag in the process. So the Jetta’s design team used that challenge to their advantage and incorporated touches such as the discreet spoiler integrated into the trunk lid and an “air curtain” design in the front bumper that calms airflow to a highly competitive 0.27 coefficient of drag.

Courtesy of VW Media

“Most of the time, you look at cars from the back,” says Bischoff, “so it’s important to recognize it.” The rear of the Jetta has a completely reworked approach; it gathers several lines that run the length of the bodywork — emphasizing the longer wheelbase — combined with a taillight/reflector that integrates with the design of the decklid. The deep creases also add what Bischoff calls a “slim-fit, athletic” appearance.

Volkswagen wanted to make some other upgrades to slick new Jetta by featuring Jetta’s palette: Sage Green and the vivid Habanero Orange for Jetta owners who want to show their personality and stand out from the crowd.

2019 VW Jetta Named a Finalist for Green Car Journal’s Car Of The Year Award

Courtesy of VW Media

The Reed Factor knows going green is important for the environment, but it can be beneficial for your wallet, too. One car that is being recognized for its “green” way is the new 2019 Jetta. It has been named a finalist for the 2019 Green Car of the Year® award by Green Car Journal. It has received praise for improved design, interior space, technology, and new 1.4-liter engine. This award honors the vehicle that Green Car Journal deems to “raise the bar in environmental performance while remaining within reach of most consumers.”

“Finalists for the 2019 Green Car of the Year® illustrate that ‘green’ comes in many forms,” said Ron Cogan, Editor and Publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “Built on VW’s MQB platform, the seventh-generation Jetta offers a bolder design, greater interior space, lots of tech, and an EPA-estimated 40 highway mpg fuel efficiency rating, a milestone often achieved by hybrid powertrains, but in this case delivered by the Jetta’s 1.4-liter TSI® gasoline engine.”

The newly designed VW Jetta is powered by Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® engine, making 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The 16-valve engine is able to generate peak torque at just 1,400 rpm, while at the same time returning EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30/40/34 mpg (city/highway/combined) regardless of transmission choice.

What’s under the hood?

The engine, internally coded EA211, features an air-to-water heat exchanger built directly into the intake module in place of an intercooler. The exhaust manifold is integrated into the head, reducing the distance that exhaust gases must travel to reach the turbocharger, thus allowing for faster response and catalytic converter light off. Valves work to regulate coolant flow into the head, which allows for rapid engine (and thus cabin) heating, as well as efficient cooling when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Both the intake and the exhaust valves feature variable valve timing, which results in improved low-rpm performance, as well as increased torque throughout the rev range. A relatively high 10:1 compression ratio further helps the engine’s efficiency, yet it still takes regular (87 octane) gasoline.

“We’re so pleased to be selected as a finalist for the Green Car of the Year award,” said Derrick Hatami, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and After Sales for Volkswagen of America, Inc. “This further validates the Jetta as an exceptionally competitive offering in the compact sedan segment, where efficiency is top of mind.”

It’s a drive you’ll have to experience

While the 2019 Jetta is more technologically advanced than ever, retaining its fun-to-drive character was of critical importance. Thus, a six-speed manual transmission is standard, with an eight-speed automatic available optionally. The all-new eight-speed automatic transmission offers the benefit of two additional gears over the Jetta’s predecessor, while remaining exactly the same weight. Primary goals in its creation were driving comfort and, of course, fuel economy. A shorter first gear is designed to provide faster acceleration than the previous model as well. Shift-by-wire hydraulics pair with optimized gear teeth and ultra-low friction mating surface to create a seamless, efficient, and comfortable drive experience.

A Start/Stop System is standard on automatic-transmission models. This technology stops the engine during idle when the brake pedal is held (such as when waiting at a red light). When the brake pedal is released, the engine restarts seamlessly.

Courtesy of VW Media

Since its inception in 2006, the Green Car of the Year has been selected by Green Car Journal editors and invited jurors from highly-respected efficiency and environmental organizations. This year’s invited Green Car of the Year® jurors include celebrity auto enthusiast Jay Leno; Jean-Michel Cousteau, President of Ocean Futures Society; Matt Petersen, President and CEO of Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator and Board Member of Global Green USA; Dr. Alan Lloyd, President Emeritus of the International Council on Clean Transportation and Senior Research Fellow at the Energy Institute, University of Texas at Austin; Mindy Lubber, President of CERES; and Jason Hartke, President of the Alliance to Save Energy.
