Drive the 2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost Before It Arrives in Showrooms!

Of course you would like to drive the new 2011 Ford F-150 with EcoBoost before it arrives in showrooms! I’m here to tell you how you can do just that, and it all starts this Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway. September 25th is the first date of the six-stop tour to drive this amazing truck before it ends in California on November 13th.

I was just reading an article about this event by The Car Connection‘s Richard Read, so keep reading to learn more:

Say what you will about Ford, but one thing’s for sure: the company knows its customers, and it knows them well. So when Ford announced that it was putting a turbocharged V-6 front and center in its F-150 lineup, the automaker understood that many loyal customers would be skeptical. To put those folks at ease and prove that the EcoBoost offers just as much power as F-150 drivers are accustomed to, Ford borrowed half a page from its own Fiesta Movement campaign: prospective buyers and curious types can now sign up for a test drive of the 2011 Ford F-150 before it arrives in showrooms.

The fun begins this Saturday as Ford begins schlepping a battalion of F-150s to locations around the country, starting in Dallas, ending in Los Angeles, with pit stops in Houston, Aberdeen, Atlanta, and Orlando along the way. (Drivers in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest: it looks like you may have to do some schlepping of your own if you want a look-see at the new model.) Interested parties, just click “Reserve My Space” on the DriveF150 website, select your city of choice, and fill in a fairly simple form. You can even change your reservation if your schedule changes. Facebook junkies: you can access the form via www.facebook.com/fordtrucks, if you prefer.

This seems like a very smart move for Ford, and from where we sit, it shows an admirable level of respect for customers. It’s not every day that you see an automaker investing this much time and energy explaining its new product to the public, face-to-face.

It’s also a smart move on the marketing front. Giving fans a chance to see the F-150 in advance of its official launch gives test-drivers the sense that they’re having a special, exclusive experience — exactly the sort of thing that they’re likely to share with friends, both in person and on social media sites. We expect to see a bushel and a peck’s worth of photos and videos on Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr before all’s said and done.

This also makes good sense for Ford from a financial standpoint. Given the harsher fuel economy restrictions coming in the next few years, another EcoBoost in Ford’s lineup helps the automaker get its house in order.

There you have it! Make sure you sign up to try out the new Ford F-150, and come back and tell me all about it.

Looking for the Best Car Alarm? Keep Reading!

You love your shiny new car, right? Of course you do! Protecting your car from theft is all part of owning a vehicle, and there are some great alarms on the market that will help keep your car safe and sound while you’re in the house or at the local store.

Car Tips posted some really helpful tips on finding the perfect alarm for you, and it’s really necessary reading regardless what type of vehicle you drive:

Know your Car: It’s important to fully grasp and understand the needs of your SUV and what alarm system it might require. Write down some of the specific amenities you are looking for in your potential car alarm, including features that could be a deal breaker. Be responsible; however, don’t simply rush into tools and luxuries you simply don’t need.

Seek out Help: Once you’ve ironed out exactly what it is you are looking for, the next step is to seek the assistance of people who can deliver. Check out some local reputable dealers and discover which alarm types match the specifications you pre-determined desires. You’ll also want to take note of installation fees or any other sort of charges that are associated with alarms and brands. Try using the Internet was a resource for finding out information about individual alarms and how they can fit your needs.

Know About the Combo: Nowadays, car alarm technology offers a number of options never seen before, but all beneficial for you and your search for the perfect solution. The combo alarm system, for instance, has provided for multiple communicative outlets to accompany the simplistic detection mechanism of the past. Understand the innovative nature of the car alarm, where it’s heading, and what new concept appeals to you the most when shopping.

Sensors: Also beneficial to your vehicle’s protection could be sensors, so we recommend looking into them and their function briefly. Broken glass sensors alert you when windshields and/or windows were irrevocably smashed, shattered, or damaged. Also, these sensors can detect and alert you when it feels your car doors were forcibly opened with malicious intent.

Convenience is Key: Try looking into remote outputs, which can start your vehicle from a remote connected to your particular keying, allowing you to control the windows and entrance of the automobile without going for your keys.

Keeping Guarded: On many occasions people will leave their vehicles hastily, without taking necessary precautions to lock up and set up the alarm. So even though your ride may be equipped with state of the art technology, it can easily go to waste if not activated at the necessary times. This is where “passive arming” comes into play. This feature will automatically set the alarm ten to twenty seconds after you depart from your vehicle—assuring that it gets the protection it is ready to provide.

Always Guard Your Car: There are a few ways you can keep your car protected, as if you’ve never even left it alone. This can be accomplished through a nifty little invention called a “two-way communication remote.” This handy device allows you to access detailed information in regards to your automobile’s status at any given time. This will disclose to you any serious concerns, such as when the car is started, or if the alarm has sounded, indicating an unwanted intrusion.

The New Ford SVT Raptor is the Total Package

This is a pretty big update for all of you Ford Raptor fans! Not only will the new 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor feature a SuperCrew option, it is also getting more towing and technology power, plus a standard 6.2-liter engine. That standard V8 engine produces 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, in addition to the 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen and SelectShift Automatic transmission.

If that’s not enough to get you excited about the new 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, there will also be new graphic and color options to choose from. Take a look at some information from Ford’s recent press release:

A new standard 6.2-liter V8 engine pumping out 411 horsepower, new technologies and a newly available SuperCrew option that gives Raptor customers more choices in cab size all ensure the 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor will remain the off-road performance truck champion in the new model year.

“When we launched the F-150 SVT Raptor, consumers were blown away with the capability of the vehicle,” said Jost Capito, director of global performance vehicles and motorsports business development. “By adding the SuperCrew, we have expanded the versatility of Raptor, and now even more enthusiasts will be able to experience the no-compromise off-road performance that only Raptor delivers.”

The F-150 SVT Raptor is the first-ever high-speed off-road performance truck offered by any manufacturer and highlights 33 years of Ford truck sales leadership by emphasizing F-150’s Built Ford Tough durability, innovation and engineering. Developed with the DNA of an off-road pre-runner, comprehensive modifications focused on chassis and suspension enhancements.

The F-150 SVT Raptor is 7 inches wider than a base F-150 to make room for the additional suspension components that give Raptor its unparalleled off-road abilities. The wider stance also gives the truck an aggressive appearance. Internal triple-bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – the first on a production truck – provide position-sensitive damping and extra suspension travel for extreme off-roading and a smooth ride on the road.

Raptor also has unique cast-aluminum front control arms and SVT-tuned 35-inch BFGoodrich® All-Terrain TA/KO 315/70-17 tires. These components give Raptor 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches of rear suspension travel on either SuperCab or the new SuperCrew.

The new available 145-inch-wheelbase SuperCrew offering with a 5.5-foot box adds to the extensive list of F-150 SVT Raptor features. While contributing additional space and flexibility for the customer, the SuperCrew delivers performance as well.

Applying lessons learned from the SuperCab F-150 SVT Raptor, engineers were able to tune the truck to handle off-road events with ease. The 12-inch-longer wheelbase on SuperCrew also delivers the benefit of a more comfortable ride, especially in rough off-road situations.

“We spent a lot of time getting the ride and suspension characteristics of the SuperCrew similar to that of the SuperCab, and we were successful in getting the same character and flavor out of the SuperCrew,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer. “While the SuperCab and SuperCrew both have different strengths, each is worthy of the Raptor nameplate.”

A larger 36-gallon fuel tank and increased towing capability – rated at 8,000 pounds – keep F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew a mainstay in the desert environment, with capabilities as a chase or tow truck.

The New 2011 Ford Explorer Testing in Dubai

I’ve covered the new 2011 Ford Explorer on here a few times, but this might be the most interesting post that I’ve done on the new SUV yet! Testing a new vehicle is crucial before you release it to the public, but Ford is going one step further by testing the new Explorer in the deserts of Dubai. The temperatures are about 125-degrees, so the redesigned SUV should be able to handle anything after that.

Here’s a video and some information below on this extreme testing:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-VqzSdaH5M

Ford has decided that the deserts in the U.S. just aren’t quite hot enough, so they decided to take the 2011 Explorer over to Dubai for some off-road, hot-weather testing. The company released some pictures (and a cool video below) testing the SUV the 125-degree weather.

As Ford noted, the Dubai desert climate provided “an ideal environment to test and validate vehicle performance in some of the world’s most extreme conditions.”

Chief Engineer for Vehicle Engineering Don Ufford adds that testing the seven-seater Explorer in Dubai also allowed them to listen to what local customers have to say about it. “We regularly sell close to 10,000 Explorers per year in the Middle East market,” Ufford said. “SUV drivers in this part of the world regularly use the broad range of capabilities these vehicles offer. Our rationale for testing in Dubai is simple: If we can perform well here, we can do well anywhere.”

The testing in Dubai let them check the effectiveness of the AC unit, but the terrain also allows them to test the four-wheel drive capabilities of the SUV in real-world conditions.

Ford’s 2011 Explorer will be offered with two engine choices including a 290 hp 3.5-liter V6 or a 235 hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost Turbo four-cylinder. — from Off-Road.com

Consumer Reports Finds the Mustang “Very Good”

According to a recent Consumer Reports press release, the company likes the new V6 Ford Mustang! It’s really no surprise when you consider what the Mustang brings to the table: 305 horsepower with 31 MPG, and that’s just the beginning. Take a look at my previous blog post about it here to learn more.

Here’s the official press release from Consumer Reports for all of the information:

The Ford Mustang earned a Very Good road test score and outscored the Chevrolet Camaro which earned a Good score, in a face-off between V6 versions of the two vehicles in Consumer Reports’ October issue.

In last year’s CR face-off between V8 versions of these two iconic cars, the Mustang also outscored the Camaro, despite being an older design.

Opting for a V6 engine did not overly dilute the fun factor in driving the Mustang, but it did for the Camaro. The Ford’s new V6 engine is not only more refined than the Camaro’s, it delivered stronger acceleration and better fuel economy. The Camaro provides decent acceleration, but it’s not as readily available. The car rides well enough but it’s almost 300 pounds heavier than the Mustang.

“The Mustang is the more agile and enjoyable car to drive of the two,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

Prices for the vehicles were $28,660 for the Mustang to $28,195 for the Camaro.

While the Mustang is Recommended, the Camaro is too new for Consumer Reports to have reliability data. CR only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s Annual Auto Survey of its more than seven million print and Web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

Full tests and ratings for both vehicles appear in the October issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale September 7. The reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org. Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to site for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

The Mustang corners well, with good steering and little body lean. The Ford Mustang V6 Premium ($28,660 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested,) is powered by a 305-hp 3.7 liter V6 engine that is quick and gets 24 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests. The six-speed manual transmission shifts crisply. Braking is Very Good. The interior is well-finished and the dashboard has a retro look, reminiscent of the 1960s.

The Camaro feels relatively ungainly, with slower steering response than the Mustang and more lean. The ride is taut yet not uncomfortable. The Chevrolet Camaro 2LT ($28,195 MSRP as tested,) is powered by a 304-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine and gets 21 mpg overall. The six-speed manual transmission is rather stiff and imprecise. Braking is Very Good. The interior is well-finished, and the thick-rimmed, leather-covered steering wheel is nicer than the Mustang’s.

Ford Teaming Up with Best Buy on Transit Connect and E-Series

Ford is looking to build a better and more fuel-efficient fleet line, and the company is teaming up with Best Buy’s Geek Squad to make that happen. Ford’s Transit Connect and E-Series vehicles are the focus of this team up, and it will start with 290 Transit Connect compact utility vans being used instead of cargo vans by the Geek Squad.

Also, Best Buy will be using 738 E-Series vans that will be used by the Geek Squad to install and service home theater equipment. Since Ford’s E-Series line has smaller displacement engines, they will provide better fuel economy than Best Buy’s current vans.

Here’s the official release from Ford:

The Ford Transit Connect and Ford E-Series van are joining Geek Squad as part of Best Buy’s continuing efforts to build a more fuel-efficient fleet and streamlined transportation system.

Best Buy – an international leader in consumer electronics and entertainment – will soon take delivery of 290 Ford Transit Connect compact utility vans and 738 Ford E-Series vans. The Transit Connects will be used instead of larger cargo vans by Geek Squad technicians who deliver, install and service home appliances. The E-Series vans will be used by those who install and service home theater equipment.

“We appreciate Best Buy’s business and confidence in our commercial van lineup,” said Len Deluca, director, Ford Commercial Truck Sales and Marketing. “The combination of Transit Connect and E-Series provides a wide range of utilization that will help Best Buy meet its customers’ needs.”

Ford Transit Connect provides utility and fuel efficiency
According to Jason Pucely, senior manager, Best Buy Fleet Operations, the selection of the Ford Transit Connect was dictated in many ways by the company’s new operating model, which drives to deliver superior client service through more efficient scheduling, inventory management and transportation systems.

“We’re streamlining all of our activities,” he explained. “We’ve developed a more effective routing system, and we’re more efficient with the tools and parts we carry when we do our work. That has enabled us to put the same technician doing the same work in a smaller, lighter vehicle.”

Pucely says the Ford Transit Connect offers the functionality Geek Squad technicians require to get their work done, while not compromising on some of the space requirements that a full-size cargo van offers.

In addition to the cost and environmental benefits, Pucely foresees other advantages.

“Our technicians typically carry diagnostic equipment, motors and other electronic parts, so having the side access panels will make it easier for them to get to the equipment they need,”
he said.

The unique appearance of the Ford Transit Connect promises to be an added bonus, says Pucely.

“A distinctive vehicle has been part of the history of Geek Squad in the marketplace,” he said. “We value our fleet as a tool to enhance our brand messaging, and the Transit Connect will certainly help in that effort.”

All of the vehicles will carry the familiar Geek Squad branding – black-and-white with the orange-and-black Geek Squad logo.

Ford E-Series vans provide functionality and improved fuel efficiency for larger jobs
While Ford Transit Connect provides an ideal solution for Geek Squad technicians who service home appliances, a full-size cargo van is essential for those who install and service home theater equipment. With fuel efficiency a priority, Best Buy opted to purchase 738 Ford E-Series vans with smaller – 4.6-liter – displacement V8 engines that provide better fuel economy than its current vans with larger engines.

“Home theater equipment is large, and it requires the space of a full-size van,” said Pucely. “But our technicians can do the same amount of work using a vehicle with a smaller engine, which is less expensive to run and burns less fuel.”

Ford Motor Company and Best Buy: Teaming up in other ways
Ford recently teamed up with Best Buy to ensure consumers have a great experience learning about and using Ford industry-leading SYNC system. Best Buy Mobile offers thousands of specially trained associates to assist with Ford SYNC mobile device/phone compatibility and basic feature setup, and SYNC training for consumers.

Best Buy also includes Ford SYNC mobile device/phone compatibility results in its monthly Best Buy Mobile Buyer’s Guide to identify which of the latest mobile devices work seamlessly with Ford SYNC. The ratings are based on phone compatibility tests conducted by Best Buy’s Geek Squad and are updated frequently. The SYNC ratings also can be found at www.syncmyride.com.

In addition, Best Buy is the primary sponsor of the No. 43 Best Buy/Insignia Ford Fusion of Richard Petty Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. The Fusion is driven by A.J. Allmendinger. In August, Best Buy and Ford will launch a national sweepstakes focused around the all-new 2011 Ford Fiesta, the Insignia television brand, Richard Petty, Allmendinger and Ford’s Rally America and X Games Fiesta driver Ken Block.

Understanding Trim Options on Your New Car

If you’ve been out shopping for a car recently, you have probably noticed that your favorite car comes with different trim options. Trim lines will basically tell you what equipment is offered from model to model, and this usually includes powertrains, too.

There is often a base model that offers minimum options, and this is usually the least expensive of all trim lines available. Once you move up in trim levels you will find more features that will include convenience, comfort, and technological options. Whichever you choose should depend on what needs you want that new car to meet and you might have to make compromises depending on your budget.

Yahoo! Autos published a great article about this topic and I wanted to post it for you here so you can get some insights on trim lines before you decide to purchase:

Which trim line is best for you?

So, what is the best trim for your money? Most people opt for the middle trims that usually has added comfort features such as a power driver’s seat with lumbar support, keyless entry, and minor upgrades to the audio system—useful benefits appreciated on a daily basis.

Pragmatically, the most important reason to upgrade trims is the availability of safety features. Today, most vehicles have standard electronic stability control (ESC) and side air bags, but if you find a model that doesn’t, upgrading to the next trim level to get that protection is something you shouldn’t hesitate to pay extra for. Curtain air bags are another important safety feature that is worth the additional cost.

When comparing other features between a lower and higher trim line, you need to look at whether the added conveniences are worth the higher price. A test drive will help you determine whether, for example, controls on the steering wheel are necessary. With the low cost of portable GPS units and the influx of GPS-enabled smart phones, a built-in navigation system may not be worth the extra cost.

Then there is resale value. Often a top-trim will depreciate more significantly than a middle trim. And a base model may be harder yet to sell. Conversely, when buying used, you can often get a better-equipped car than you could if buying a new one.

The Ford Mustang: Timeless Design

The Ford Mustang is arguably the most iconic car ever made in America. The years pass and the models change, but the true heritage of the Mustang never does. One look at a new Mustang brings back feelings of nostalgia for any long-time fan of the pony car.

In April 1964, the Mustang went on sale for the first time and dealers received over 22,000 orders for it. One special piece of Mustang history lives right here in Garland, TX: the day the car was first available, 15 bidders were wanting the same model, and the winner slept in his car overnight until his check cleared the following day.

While I’ve talked about the history of the Mustang before, Road & Track recently provided a story to Yahoo! Autos with a listing of timeless vehicles. It shouldn’t be any surprise that the Ford Mustang made that list, and you can see the writeup right here:

In 1964 the Ford Mustang inspired the term “pony car,” an entire breed of high-performance sports coupes with a budget price and good performance. With the exception of a few fallow years in the 1970s, the Mustang has remained at the cutting edge of the pony car market in both looks and performance.

Completely revamped for the 2005 model year, and freshened for 2010, the latest Mustang is arguably the best-looking pony car ever. For approximately $30,000, the 2010 Mustang GT offers a growling V-8 engine and enough attitude to make Russell Crowe think twice before picking a fight. For 2011, the Mustang is available with a 305-horsepower V-6 engine capable of 31 mpg on the highway (when equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission).
