The Ford Focus is one of only six small cars that were tested that actually earned top marks from the IIHS. This is not the first time that the Ford Focus  has been recognized for their commitment to vehicle safety. It has also earned the federal government’s highest  rating – a five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Steve Kenner, global director of Ford’s Automotive Safety Office said, “Ford is committed to designing vehicles that help keep people safe. We are constantly seeking innovative ways to help drivers avoid accidents and keep occupants safe when an incident does occur.”

According to Ford, he body structure of the vehicle is engineered to be “highly protective” utilizing extensive use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels. Boron steel in the Focus’ structure absorbs and redirects crash forces to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a crash.

There are also a number of features that focus on safety, such as the standard MyKey® technology, an Ford exclusive. MyKey is ideal for families with teen drivers. Parents can program it to limit audio volume, limit the car’s top spee, and to encourage teens to wear their seat belt with the use of chimes and by muting the radio if the front-row safety belts aren’t buckled.

Ford: Everyday is Earth Day

Green Car Dallas HoustonIn a day and age where every one talks about being green, there are people and companies who do more than talk, they are making every day Earth Day. Ford Motor Company is one of those businesses, from their vehicles of today (to those in the future) to its facilities around the globe.

Did you know?
From shredded retired currency to Indian grass, sugar cane, dandelions, corn and coconuts, a wide range of eco-conscious materials are under review for potential application in Ford vehicles.

Since 2000, Ford reduced the amount of water used by 10.6 billion gallons, or 62 percent.

The equivalent of about two pairs of jeans, about 39 plastic bottles and about 31,000 soybeans already are used in the 2013 Ford Fusion.

Since 2010, Ford kept 62,000 bumpers from being in landfilled.

By 2016, Ford plans to send just 13.4 pounds of waste-to-landfill per vehicle as part of a five-year plan.

The amount of energy used to make each Ford vehicle will decrease by 25 percent by 2016.

Thermal Imaging Used to Hunt Criminals Catch Leaks, Design Quieter Vehicles

Thermal technology used to catch criminals helps Ford catch air leaks.

Thermal technology used to catch criminals helps Ford catch air leaks.

Ford engineers are at it, again. They are now  pioneering thermal imaging technology to find and eliminate air leaks from the cabin of vehicles. This is technology which is similar to what law enforcement uses to track down criminals. The end result is less wind noise and a quieter ride.

Thermal imaging uses cameras to photograph heat. Thermal imaging cameras capture radiation that appears and shows as an infrared image. In Ford’s testing, the air leaks show up as hot spots which reveals that heated air is escaping the vehicle.

Ford Vs. Competition

According to data from Ford’s U.S. Global Quality Research System, the 2013 Ford Fusion earned a 67 percent approval rating for interior quietness compared to 58 percent for the 2012 Toyota Camry.*

“Ford is redefining our vehicles through many innovations – both features to improve the driving experience and fuel economy, and advanced new tools to help engineer better vehicles,” said William Dedecker, noise, vibration and harshness engineering supervisor. “We are using thermal imaging to further improve quietness so customers can enjoy the other features our vehicles offer, such as audio systems… and even the sounds of silence.”

Closing the Gap

Not only does this help Ford reduce noise and control air leaks; it helps increases heating and cooling efficiency by reducing energy loss, similar to how sealing a home prevents leaks of heated air in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

Before thermal imaging, Ford engineers relied on sensory findings to prevent air leaks. They would fill the car with smoke, then watch for the smoke to exit from small holes. They also walked around a vehicle and would feel for air leakage. In addition, they relied on non-medical stethoscopes to try to hear air leaking from the cabin, a method they still rely on to some extent.

While successful, these approaches were not as consistent. With the use of thermal imaging, engineers can speed up development time by finding results at a faster rate.

Engineers have identified several key areas that are vulnerable to air leaks and letting noise into a vehicle, including moonroofs, window glass, door trim, trunk lids and liftgates, doors and the base of the windshield.

Ford’s Hottest Cars

Car sales are in the fast lane for the first five months of 2013. Sales in the United States are up 8.2%, that is compared to the same time period last year.  So, what are some of the more popular models that have shown even more substantial growth? Ford has made the “Top Hottest Car” list not once but twice — and with numbers that are well into the double digits.

# 9 – Ford Escape (Check out this video and see why it’s hot, hot, hot and a top pick of many automotive critics)

Ford has sold 127,932 Escapes in the first five months of 2013. That is 29.7% increase from the same period in 2012. In 2008, Ford sold 139,434 units for the year. The 2013 Escape was fully redesign for the first time since its introduction in 2001. The all-new Escape features includes a panoramic moonroof, automated parking option and a soft-touch dashboard. Popular Mechanics named the Escape “Car of the Year” in its 2013 Automotive Excellence Awards, praising the car’s “excellent engine options, abundance of technology and great price.”

#6 — Ford Explorer

Sales of the Explorer may have slipped in 2009 and 2010, but Explorer sales have skyrocketed in the past two years thanks in part to a total redesign for the 2011. The vehicle was transformed from a traditional SUV to a sought-after crossover vehicle. In 2011 and 2012, Ford sold roughly 135,700 and 164,200 Explorers, respectively. Through May 2013, sales have already totaled almost 85,000 in the U.S. Alone. That’s more than a 33% from the first five months of 2012.

Randall Reed Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

The Reed Family Celebrates National Teacher Appreciation Week.

From the Reed family of dealerships, we thank teachers, from Texas to Oklahoma and beyond, for everything they do!

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” ~ Henry Ford

Normally, this blog about cars, trucks and SUVs, but today, I want to take a moment to express my appreciation for teachers. If it were not for life’s great teachers, our communities, our country, our world would not be what it is today.

Teachers help mold and shape our children and our future.  They often give more time than they are are paid for, provide supplies on their own dime and share their intelligence, wisdom and patience day after day.

One special way the Reed family recognized teachers this year was to award a new 2013 Ford Escape to Humble Humble Independent School District’s teacher of the year, Joanna Grigsby. Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble, Texas on Hwy. 59; Chuck Kramer, GM/Managing Partner; and our family could not have been more thrilled to have been part of recognizing both the teacher of the year and all of Humble ISD’s nominees.

Each teacher of the year nominee also received a gift certificate for $1,000 to cover their down payment on a new Ford car, truck or SUV. In addition, each nominee was offered a free maintenance package for free from Ford. Teachers do so much for our kids. This is one small way we can express our gratitude.

All of our dealerships, from Oklahoma City to Dallas and Garland to Houston, Spring and Humble, Texas, believe in partnering with schools in our communities to help support both our kids and our teachers.

We hope everyone will take a moment to  thank a teacher this week for all they do for us, our kids and community every single day.
