2020 Ford Explorer ST & Hybrid Models have Elite Performance

Last week Ford revealed the much-anticipated, all-new 2020 Ford Explorer. Today, the American Automaker took it two steps further with revealing two all-new models that will take Explorer drivers faster and further than ever before. The all-new Explorer ST and the all-new Explorer Hybrid complete the model’s broadest-ever lineup. It includes a variety of driver and passenger comforts, an array of technologies that improve every drive, and new powertrain options that deliver power and efficiency.

“This new generation of Explorer recognizes that every family – and every driver – is unique,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president, product development and purchasing. “With an all-new ST and an all-new hybrid, there truly is an Explorer for every adventure.”

The newest Ford Explorer ST is the most powerful Ford SUV yet! Engineered by the Ford Performance team, Explorer ST uses a specially tuned 3.0-liter EcoBoost® engine projected to achieve 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. A top speed target for track drivers stands at 143 mph.

“We designed it to be an ST from the beginning,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief functional engineer. “There’s no mistaking its ST DNA. It has a performance feel with sustained performance capability and wears an unmistakably ST appearance. More than anything, it’s just a hell of a lot of fun to drive.”

The Explorer ST will provide drivers with an engaging experience by a quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive with selectable traction control. Available upgrades include an ST Street Pack and an ST Track Pack. Both have 21-inch aluminum wheels with differing levels of performance brakes and feature larger vented rotors, red-painted brake calipers with stainless steel pistons, and larger brake pads for even better stopping power.

The Ford Explorer ST model will be offering an upgraded sport mode that will deliver an epic experience. When engaged via the selectable drive mode dial in the center console, the steering system tightens for sportier reaction, the gas pedal responds more aggressively, gears hold longer and shift quicker, and an enhanced engine note plays through the cabin.

Explorer ST will be a standout courtesy of a black mesh grille insert, liftgate appliqué, lower bodyside details, roof-rack side rails and skid plate elements. “EXPLORER” badging stretches across the front edge of the hood.

Inside, a 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster is standard. A flat-bottomed, heated steering wheel embossed with an ST logo and unique floor mats are subtle cues exclusive to Explorer ST. Leather sport bucket seats with micro-perforation, City Silver accent stitching and ST logo complete the sporty feel.

Explorer ST comes standard with a

  • Class III Trailer Tow Package with Cargo Management System
  • Active Park Assist 2.0 – Ford’s new driver-assist parking system that takes control of the steering wheel, gas pedal, brake pedal and gear shifter during parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers with a simple touch of a button.

The Explorer Hybrid- Offering No-Compromise Efficiency

A Ford SUV that has great performance with the power to go further than ever before. The all-new Explorer Hybrid, which features a 3.3-liter hybrid powertrain, is projected to produce a combined system 318 horsepower. An EPA-estimated range of more than 500 miles between gas station fill-ups is targeted for the rear-wheel-drive model*.

Thanks to an all-new 10-speed modular hybrid transmission, unlike previous hybrid vehicles, a specially designed liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery is built into the Explorer chassis below the second-row seats to preserve cargo and passenger space.

“Reduced cargo space in hybrids is a thing of the past for Ford customers,” said Bill Gubing, Explorer chief engineer.

All-new Explorer Hybrid is a no-compromise Ford hybrid SUV designed to offer performance and capability in a fuel-efficient package.

Available in Limited edition trim, Explorer Hybrid comes with

  • Active Noise Cancellation
  • Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+™ driver-assist technologies
  • Leather seats with micro-perforation and accent stitching
  • Second-row heated seats
  • 14-speaker B&O premium sound system
  • Wireless phone charging pad and 10-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats.

Ford Revealed the Powerful Redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer, America’s all-time best-selling SUV is making a mark in Ford Explorer history. Ford Motor Company refers to it as being a redesign from the ground up! The all-new 2020 Ford Explorer delivers more power, capability and adventure tech than ever before. Arriving this summer, the Explorer now features the broadest model lineup ever.

Ford’s flexible new rear-wheel-drive architecture – makes the explorer more capable, comfortable, sportier and roomier in all three rows!

Off-road? No problem thanks to the intelligent four-wheel drive and an available new Terrain Management SystemTMthat features seven easy-to-engage drive modes. Powertrain offerings include a 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost® V6 projected to produce 365 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque using 93-octane gas, making this the most powerful Explorer ever. The Explorer lineup now features standard, XLT, Limited, Limited Hybrid, ST and Platinum models.

Ford introduces its all-new 2020 Explorer – a complete redesign of America’s all-time best-selling SUV – that now features the broadest model lineup ever, more power and space, and smart new technologies to help tackle life’s adventures. Courtesy of Ford Media

“Explorer drivers told us what they want – more capability, more power, more space,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s head of product development and purchasing. “They want more technology, not just for the driver, but for the whole family. And they want all of it with a beautifully sporty exterior. This new Explorer gives them all of that, and more, helping make every journey more enjoyable.”

Standard features include a power liftgate, 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with all-new 10-speed transmission, 8-inch digital touch screen with SYNC®3, FordPass ConnectTM Wi-Fi service for up to 10 devices and more.

“We obsessed about what Explorer customers need and want,” said Bill Gubing, Explorer chief engineer. “We met with customer groups, pored through internet forums, and dissected social media posts to determine what they love about today’s Explorer and understand their pain points. Then we found ways to improve it across the board. Every enhancement on this all-new Explorer was inspired by our customers.”

Technology that heightens the travel experience

Ford’s New Active Park 2.0

Ford is always pushing to bring more driver-assist technology to the market. The all-new Explorer introduces available Active Park Assist 2.0. This allows the driver to park in a parallel or perpendicular spot with a touch of a button without having to work the steering wheel, gear shifter, gas pedal or brake pedal. Available reverse brake assist, uses radar and ultrasonic sensors to detect an object in Explorer’s path, and can apply the brakes automatically to avoid an imminent collision when the vehicle is backing up at a low speed – such as when exiting a driveway.

The Explorer has upgraded their intelligence with Adaptive Cruise Control with Speed Sign Recognition. In addition to automatically slowing when traffic ahead slows and helping keep the vehicle centered in its lane, the system uses cameras to read speed signs and, combined with the available navigation system, adjusts cruise control settings accordingly.

Explorer comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360TM, a suite of driver-assist technologies including:

  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, which includes Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning and Dynamic Brake Support
  • Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Rearview camera with built-in lens cleaner
  • Auto headlamps with auto high-beams
  • Available Evasive Steering Assist
  • Available Post-Impact Braking

“It’s not about filling the vehicle with technology for technology’s sake,” said Chris Billman, Ford Co-Pilot360 engineering manager. “It’s about improving the experience, making driving less stressful, and helping the driver to feel more confident behind the wheel.”

Ford Pass Connect for Everyone

All 3 rows will enjoy FordPass Connect, a standard feature that serves up 4G LTE Wi-Fi for up to 10 mobile devices with a compatible wireless subscription service. FordPass Connect gives drivers remote access to their Explorer, allowing them to use their smartphone to lock, unlock, locate and start the vehicle, as well as monitor key vehicle diagnostics.T

The Interior Technology that Enhances all Passagers Experience

Courtesy of Ford Media

Explorer features an available 10.1-inch touch screen mounted in portrait configuration on the center stack. Navigation maps can fill the entire screen for easy viewing, or split the space with audio information. The screen uses capacitive glass comparable to what consumers are accustomed to on smartphones and tablets, providing a quicker, more responsive interaction with the updated SYNC 3 system. Standard SYNC 3’s more intuitive layout gives drivers compatibility with available features such as Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto® and Waze navigation.

A wireless charging pad is available that allows customers to recharge compatible mobile devices, and up to four USB ports, including new type-C outlets, charge next-generation mobile devices. Up to three 12-volt outlets and a 110-volt outlet are also available.

For music lovers, Explorer offers an available 980-watt, 14-speaker B&O premium audio system. Access to SiriusXMTM satellite radio is standard and comes with new touch screen graphics and functionality – including a display of the day’s sports scores. HD RadioTMis standard on Limited and Platinum models.

The touch screen shares information with the available 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster, which displays important vehicle information such as speedometer and gas gauge. It uses 3D animated graphics to change information depending on which of the seven drive modes are selected using the available Terrain Management SystemTM.

The Explorer Design & Power

Courtesy of Ford Media

With more than 2 and a half tons of pulling power. Thanks to the Explorer’s all-new rear-wheel-drive architecture the vehicle is a more-than-capable towing machine, regardless of engine. Vehicles equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 EcoBoost and the towing package can haul up to 5,600 pounds, while those outfitted with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost and a towing package can tow up to 5,300 pounds.

Explorer comes standard with 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, but across the lineup drivers can opt for one of seven wheel designs, including 21-inch premium aluminum wheels available on Platinum models. Other Platinum differentiators include door handles with satin aluminum insert, liftgate appliqué, lower bodyside cladding insert, roof-rack side rails and a unique grille with satin aluminum finish.

Platinum models also feature a standard twin-panel moonroof, which allows light to flood the most comfortable Explorer cabin ever. Explorer Platinum includes special leather seats, plus leather-wrapped steering wheel, dashboard, door rollovers, and door and front console armrests.

Randall Reed Continues to Excel in Ford’s Hall of Fame, President’s Awards & Triple Crown Awards

Randall Reed

Many ask what the Ford Triple Crown is, how does a dealer achieve receiving one and how hard is it to get – especially year after year?  The Triple Crown is Ford’s highest honor. It is only given to the most elite dealers in the nation. In order to be recognized, a dealership must receive already being a multi-award-winning dealership to even qualify. I am proud to be the first independent Ford dealer to win the highly coveted Triple Crown at every Randall Reed dealership in the same year. In addition, I was also thankful to be the seventh inductee ever selected for the Ford Dealer Hall of Fame. This incredible honor is based on sales volume, and also requires a dealer be respected, admired and loved by the Ford Motor Company, Ford Credit, their own employees as well as other Ford dealers.

Earning the prestigious Triple Crown recognition requires that a dealer is providing award-winning sales and service. They must first earn the President’s Award for customer service; the Ford One Hundred Club, an honor based on vehicle sales; and the Premier Club. All of our hard-working and caring Ford dealership team have these accolades and for several, they have actually earned them all, including the Triple Crown, for six consecutive years.

What Is the President’s Award?

This award is given to recognize that a dealership has achieved excellence in customer satisfaction. The Reed family takes great pride in this particular award as customer satisfaction is paramount. The dealership group is the recipient of multiple President’s Awards and has been year after year during our 30-plus years as a dealer.

What is the Top One Hundred Club?

Many of the Randall Reed dealerships are members of the Ford Top One Hundred Club. Being selected for this exclusive club is in recognition of achieving excellence in Sales, Service or Parts.

 What is Partners in Quality?

The Partners in Quality Award from Ford Motor Credit recognizes dealers who have shown the highest level of outstanding customer service and satisfaction as well as their ongoing partnership with Ford Credit. The Reed family is thankful to have multiple locations recognized for their ongoing efforts to take care of the customer first.

What is the Premier Club?

The FCSD Premier Club Award is yet another honor that the Randall Reed family of dealerships has received multiple times for multiple locations. The honorees are comprised of an elite group that is truly committed to excellence.

These awards are all very difficult to achieve and only a percentage of the dealers are able to do so. However, our dealership family is dedicated to providing the highest level of customer care. We are here to serve our customers and all of their automotive needs. Customer total satisfaction is the best reward and the awards make the journey all the more enjoyable.

The All-New 2020 Ford Police Interceptors is the Future for our Law Enforcement

Courtesy of Ford Motor Company Media

The all-new Ford 2020 Police Interceptor Utility takes to the streets in 2019. The lineup will include Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, F-150 Police Responder, Expedition SSV, F-150 SSV, Transit PTV and SSV Plug-In Hybrid Sedan.

A hybrid vehicle is ideal for our law enforcement, and not to mention taxpayers – because of the potential for significant idle-time fuel and cost savings. When police vehicles are stationary, a conventional gasoline engine must run continuously to power emergency lighting, radios, computers and other on-board electrical equipment. The Police Interceptor Hybrid’s powertrain allows the engine to shut off for extended periods, powering the electrical equipment via its lithium-ion hybrid battery, helping achieve significant reductions in fuel usage and CO2 emissions.

“Our Police Interceptor Utility’s standard hybrid powertrain provides the potential for significant fuel savings with improved performance and no tradeoffs in safety or interior passenger or cargo space,” said Stephen Tyler, Ford police brand marketing manager. “It’s a win-win-win formula for law enforcement.”

The new and improved 2020 Police Interceptor Utility hybrid has a projected EPA-estimated rating of 24 MPG combined, a 41 percent improvement over the current Police Interceptor Utility equipped with a 3.7-liter gas engine. Projections indicate the first pursuit-rated hybrid police utility will save between $3,500 and $5,700 per vehicle annually in fuel costs versus the current Police Interceptor Utility*. If those savings were applied to every Police Interceptor Utility sold in 2017, it would equate to between $118 million and $193 million*, or more than 43 million gallons of fuel.

In recent testing by Michigan State Police, the all-new Police Interceptor Utility hybrid had the fastest 0-100 mph acceleration, fastest lap, fastest average lap and highest top speed of 137 mph, versus competitive police utility vehicles tested, including V8-powered entries. The only faster entry was its cousin – Ford Police Interceptor Utility powered by a 3.0-liter EcoBoost®engine.

At the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department testing, the new Police Interceptor Utility hybrid bested the outgoing 3.7-liter model in 0-60 mph by 1.1 seconds and 0-100 mph by 4.7 seconds. It also turned a faster lap time that was 2.4 seconds better than the 3.7-liter and fastest average lap time that was 1.7 seconds better.

Technology that Keeps Officers Safe

Courtesy of Ford Media

The Police Interceptor Utility is equipped with a number of advanced features designed to officer safety. Factory-installed Police Perimeter Alert uses sensors to monitor an approximately 270-degree area around the vehicle. It analyzes nearby movement to detect potentially threatening behavior. When such motion is detected, the system automatically turns on the rear camera, sounds a chime, rolls up the windows and locks the doors. Motion trails of the detected threat appear on the digital instrument cluster so officers can monitor.

Available driver-assist technology includes Pre-Collision Assist with automatic emergency braking, which features Pedestrian Detection and forward collision warning. A unique disable switch for law enforcement allows officers to temporarily override the system to perform precision immobilization technique maneuvers when necessary.

Additional optional equipment includes Rear Camera On-Demand, which allows officers to view behind the vehicle at the touch of a button, and a host of factory-installed and factory-sealed wiring and lighting packages that offer agencies turnkey solutions.

Three powertrain options for the all-new Police Interceptor Utility include a standard 3.3-liter hybrid, plus available 3.0-liter EcoBoost® and 3.3-liter V6 engines. All are powered by a new 10-speed automatic transmission and feature standard full-time Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and deep snow/sand traction control mode.

“Whether patrolling or sitting idle, the all-new Police Interceptor Utility will change the way officers work,” said Bill Gubing, chief engineer for Police Interceptor Utility and Ford Explorer. “Everything about it was designed for keeping police officers safe, comfortable and ready for action.”

A proud History of Outfitting Law Enforcement

Courtesy of Ford Media

The popularity of Ford police vehicles continues a history that spans nearly seven decades. In that time, Ford has outfitted law enforcement with purpose-built vehicles based on some of its most popular nameplates.

In 1950, Ford became the first manufacturer to offer a police package vehicle, focusing then – as it does now – on safety, durability, performance and the attributes of being purpose-built and upfit-friendly. The Interceptor name debuted on the optional 110-horsepower flathead V8 engine for 1951.

By 1961, 58 percent of police vehicles in use in the 50 largest U.S. cities were Ford models. An emphasis on delivering total performance – including driving dynamics such as acceleration, braking and cornering – continued throughout the 1960s.

The Crown Victoria name was given to the Police Interceptor in 1983. Its available police package featuring an optional 351-cubic-inch 5.8-liter high-output V8 helped make it the preferred choice of municipalities across North America for decades.

Ford discontinued the once-ubiquitous V8-equipped Crown Victoria in 2011, and since then, its new Police Interceptors – most notably, Police Interceptor Utility – have continued to refortify law enforcement fleets. In 2017, Ford Police Interceptor Utility alone accounted for more than half of all police vehicle sales in the United States, outselling all other police vehicles combined.

EPA Estimated MPG. See FuelEconomy.gov for details. *Computed using fuel costs of $2.75 to $4.50 per gallon.

Volkswagen Shares their Secrets of VW’s First Electric Race Car

It is amazing how fast technology has advanced for electric cars. Here is some Reed Factor news you can use, Volkswagen shares the secrets of their first electric race car.

Cedric Delnatte, a motorsports engineer designed his dream: a new electric vehicle to take on one of the world’s great racing challenges, from scratch, with no rules beyond those of physics and driver safety.

From the beginning, Delnatte said the team quickly recognized that they are faced with finding the perfect balance between power and weight. At 670 hp, the I.D. R has a mighty amount of grunt, but not as much as, say, a typical stock-bodied racecar. But with just under 2,425 lbs. to move, the I.D. R can accelerate more quickly than most top-level, open cockpit race cars.

Delnatte said computer simulations quickly found that limiting weight was vitally important for mastering the Pikes Peak route and its 156 corners — even if it meant sacrificing some power.

“Pikes Peak is very specific because it’s made out of corners, so having a lot of power doesn’t really help you – it helps you only on straight lines,” he says.  “You don’t need this power to be fast on the corners.”

Another challenge was the battery pack. At 45 kilowatt-hours, the battery pack on the I.D. R can hold about 26 percent more energy than a 2018 Volkswagen e-Golf – again, a substantial but not overwhelming amount. Delnatte said the I.D. R was designed to make the most of that energy by relying on recuperation – essentially, using its twin electric motors as generators when driver Romain Dumas needed to slow down to recapture energy back to the batteries. Some 20 percent of the energy the I.D. R used to climb Pikes Peak came from brake regeneration.

Keeping style in mind of design, the team knew they had to make the most of all the part. The parts relied on extensive aerodynamic testing and chassis design.

The I.D. R looks like no other car because it’s designed to slip through the air as effortlessly as possible. Every part of the car was optimized either for airflow or downforce, from the smooth floor to the massive rear wing. Since Pikes Peak racers end up at 14,000 feet, the higher altitude makes it harder to maintain downforce. The oversize wing and other parts create so much downward pressure at speed that it’s like having another I.D. R sitting on top of itself.

“If you could rotate the car,” says Delnatte, “the car would fly.”

Driver Romain Dumas had some challenges adapting to an electric race car. The low slung, centered cockpit provides great aerodynamics but has limited visibility. Dumas’ seat is slightly off-center, as the battery pack has been split in two, with one half next to him and the other behind him for better front/rear weight balance. The other challenge: Just how quiet the I.D. R runs.

“It’s much less loud than a conventional engine car, which was affecting Romain quite a lot,” says Delnatte. “A driver in general is adjusting his driving style based on the noise that he’s hearing, and in this type of car you don’t hear that much.”

Now that Pikes Peak has been conquered, the I.D. R team has some other plans for the car. Next month, Volkswagen Motorsports will announce the I.D. R’s next challenge. Delnatte couldn’t discuss specifics, but he said just as Pikes Peak took months of work to master, the next target will need its own set of innovations.

“If you want to go back to a track basically at sea level, you would change the aero because you don’t need such a big rear wing,” he said. “If you go to a longer track, you would need maybe different batteries, or if you go to a track where you have more straight lines, you would need more power and less drag. So it’s really depending on the target you fix.”

U.S. Navy Veteran Jimmy Rogers and his wife Lindsey founded the charity and work hard to find special items for every shipment, whether it’s a jersey from their favorite sports team, cookies from their hometown bakery or much-needed footwear.

“I found my fellow crew members were lonely and missed the comforts of home,” said Rogers. “When care packages came, they were often filled with poor quality items or things they didn’t need. Although sent by caring individuals, there was nothing personal about the packages. Every care package we send is customized to each recipient. What makes us unique is that they all contain a pair of boots.”
