Ford Mustang Reaches New Heights

mustangspace1The Ford Mustang is making history again as it conquers the final frontier. Not a full-sized Mustang, but a Mustang nonetheless. Two Mustang fans from California, Michael Sego and Steve Kubitz, tackled this task earlier in the month and got some interesting results.

After soaring for over an hour, the balloon obtained a maximum height of almost 21 miles. Six hours later, the team was able to locate their treasure by using a GPS transmitter that was affixed to the shuttle.

“We wanted to celebrate 50 years of Mustang and the impending arrival of the all-new 2015 Mustang by doing something really special,” said Sego. “Mustang has always been about getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road, but we decided to take to the open sky.” This type of thinking is congruent with the spirit of space exploration, which coincidentally began to take shape around the same time period that the original Mustang was created.

mustangspace3Like space exploration, the Mustang aims to instill a sense of discovery, expansion and freedom. Sending the Mustang to space serves as a a tangible representation of these ideas as Ford continues to explore the limits of their ever-popular muscle icon. “More than 9 million Mustangs have been built in the past 50 years, going to virtually every part of the planet,” added Sego. “We’re excited to have been able to take our favorite car to new heights by launching it into space.”
